THE LASER SAILOR AND 10,000 HOURS

Malcolm Gladwell in this book explores the lives of people like Mozart , the Beatles, Bill Gates, and other really successful people to find that before success, they had put in at least 10,000 hours of practice (or trial) before they got really good at what they were doing.

10,000 hours is what?  It is an 8 hour day, 5 days a week for almost 5 years with no time off for Christmas or sickness.

Now that is his 10,000 hour rule. That is the minimum that great performance needs.

He thinks no one is just born with the talent.

You have to pay your dues.

So how much sailing

practice and regatta

sailing will you

be doing this

week, month,

or year?

?

  1. Good point.

Does reading blogs about sailing count towards the total?

  2. Probably reading and writting only counts a little and maybe sailing canoe pictures--not much. But then an Old Town Canoe was the first thing I ever sailed and that was 100 years ago.

  3. You've been sailing 100 years? So if you only put in 2 hours a week... that now adds up to 2 x 50 x 100 = 10,000 hours. You must be awesome!

  4. Malcolm just says that the really top notch people put in 10,000 or more before they are really good. Probably you can put in that much and still be bad--- so just give advice to others then.
